A percentage is a number expressed as a fraction of 100. The word comes from the Latin "per centum" meaning "by the hundred." For example, 45% means 45 out of 100, or 45/100 = 0.45.
To find X% of Y, multiply Y by X and divide by 100. For example, 20% of 150 = (20 × 150) ÷ 100 = 30. This is the most common percentage calculation used in everyday life.
Percentage change = ((New Value - Old Value) ÷ |Old Value|) × 100. A positive result means an increase, while a negative result means a decrease. This is commonly used to compare prices, salaries, and statistics.
